What Is a Hair System?

A hair system – which you may have also heard called a “wig”, “hairpiece”, “toupee”, or “unit” – is a set of hair attached to base, that is designed to cover areas of hair loss and blend in with your natural hair.

Hair systems can differ in many ways: Base material, construction, hair type, density, and other factors can all affect how a system looks, feels and fits into a wearer’s lifestyle and routine.

The one thing that all hair systems have in common is the need for secure attachment. That’s where hair system tapes and liquid adhesives come in!

 

How Are Hair Systems Attached to the Scalp?

There are two primary adhesive options for attaching a hair system to a wearer’s scalp: tapes and liquid adhesives.

Both can provide a secure bond, but the right choice depends on factors such as the hair system base, desired wear time, lifestyle, scalp type, and personal preference.

 

Hair System Tape

Hair system tape is a double-sided adhesive tape used to securely attach a hair system to the scalp. One side bonds to the base of the hair system while the other adheres to the skin.

One of biggest advantages of tape is ease of use. Tapes are available in several forms, including rolls, strips, minis, and pre-cut contours, giving professionals and wearers flexibility when working with different hair systems and application areas

Liquid Adhesives

Liquid adhesives, also referred to as hair glue, are another option for attaching hair systems. Instead of using pre-cut pieces or rolls of tape, liquid adhesives are applied directly to the scalp before the hair system is placed.

Because liquid adhesives can be applied across a larger bonding area, they offer flexibility in how and where the system is secured. Application and cleanup can require more technique than tape, making proper product selection and application especially important.

A Great Bond Starts with Preparation

Before attaching a hair system, you’ll want to start with a clean, properly prepared scalp. Natural oils, leftover adhesive, and other buildup can get in the way of the adhesive bonding as intended, so a little prep can go a long way.

Removal

Eventually, every hair system needs to come off, and removing it properly is an important part of protecting both the system and the wearer’s skin.

Rather than pulling the system off of the scalp, an adhesive remover should be used to help break down the adhesives so that the system can be removed gently.

Which remover to use can depend on the type of system, the adhesive, and how quickly or cleanly you want the adhesive to be broken down.

For example, C-22® Solvent is our strongest remover, designed to quickly break down adhesives. Another remover is Lace Release®, which is designed specifically for mesh systems, helping release the delicate material while leaving the adhesive behind for a stronger remover to finish off.

Once the system is off, both the scalp and system will need to be cleaned of all of the leftover adhesive and remover residue.

Caring for a Hair System

Proper care doesn’t stop once the system has been removed. Everyday wear, washing, styling, and environmental exposure can all affect a hair system over time, making regular care an important part of maintaining its appearance.

During cleanup, leftover adhesive, dirt, and residue should be carefully removed and rinsed away, taking additional care when working with delicate lace or mesh bases.

From there, gently detangling, moisturizing, and conditioning the hair can help manage the dryness, frizz, and tangling that can develop through everyday wear.

The base of the system also deserves attention. Checking for loose knots, shedding, tears, or other signs of wear gives you an opportunity to address smaller issues before they become bigger ones.
