How to ensure hair system tape sticks.

From sweat, skin oils, leftover adhesive, residue, weather, skin conditions, etc. – there are a lot of scalp factors that can negatively affect how tape sticks.

And tape that doesn’t stick leads to a system that slips, which is a nightmare for both stylist and client.

To prevent apocalyptic futures like that from happening, here are some tips to ensure that hair system tape sticks.

Preparation Helps Tape Stick

Preparation is the foundation of a successful and secure hair system install. It helps to prevent adhesive failure, slippage, lift, etc. — which is critical to the wear experience.

There are a few steps to take to ensure the best prep for bonding:

  • Wash your Hands: Oils and residue from hands can potentially affect the bond of the adhesive. A nice wash and a pair of gloves will help prevent that.
  • Clean Surfaces & Tools: Dirt, residue, etc. from your tools & workspace can affect the adhesive as well. Cleaning and wiping down w/ 99% Alcohol will remove that problem.
  • Wash the Client’s Hair & System: As you’ve probably guessed, washing the bio hair and the system will help get rid of more oil and residue from the previous wear. It’ll also keep the system in tip-top shape!

If everything is prepped properly, you should have fewer problems with the tack of your tape. To learn more about how prep can make a difference, read our prep products overview blog.

With proper prep, the scalp should be clean, smooth, and free from any obstacles that might negatively affect the tape. All ensuring the ideal install and wear experience.

Know Your Client

No one person is exactly the same. Like snowflakes.

Some may have oilier scalps. Others may have sensitive skin. Irritation can pop up. And these are just a few different scalp problems that can affect the tape. That’s why knowing your client will help you choose the right adhesive for them.

Just a few examples:

  • Client has sensitive skin: Lace Front, Sensi-Tak Select, and No-Shine are all great tapes for sensitive skin.
  • Client has oily skin: Our scalp protectors help provide a barrier between scalp and system that allows for a better surface for tape to stick to.
  • To prevent irritation: Scalp protectors (once again!) provide a protective barrier for the scalp. Hypoallergenic tapes, such as Pro-Flex II, are also made to be skin safe and gentle.

Getting to know your clients’ needs will help ensure that you are giving them the products and care they need, without having to fight the obstacles in your path.

Know Your Environment

Climate can have a globe-sized effect on how well tape sticks.

Hot and humid climates can bring more sweat, moisture, and oils that can make it harder for tape to stick and hold well. Cold climates can make the adhesive brittle and hard, leading to breaks and making it harder to place on the scalp.

So how you deal with it?

Dealing with cold is simpler. Just be sure that you are storing your hair system tapes in a well-ventilated, cool, dark, dry, room-temperature controlled environment (60-80°F). Keep the bags sealed for the ultimate defense.

For heat, products like scalp protectors can provide a clean surface area for the tape to stick to, and provide a barrier between the adhesive and the liquids that may affect it. Cleaning the scalp beforehand with 99% alcohol will also help to ensure that tape sticks.

Knowing these factors will help you find solutions to ensure that the tape will stick to your client’s scalp.
