All You Need to Know About Scalp Protectors

It may not come as a surprise that at Walker Tape, we love our hair system tapes. But we have other products that we’ve put a lot of love and care into. Our prep products are a great example. Each one has been made with you and your clients in mind, to ensure that you’re able to provide the best service possible.

One of our more popular kinds of prep products are our scalp protectors. These are a great prep product to have on hand for any stylist. If you’re unfamiliar with scalp protectors, here is a quick overview of what they are and what they can do.

What Are Scalp Protectors?

To start, let’s explain what scalp protectors are. They are prep products that do what they say, they protect the scalp and help increase adhesive or tape hold times.

It’s not uncommon for adhesives to cause some irritation on some clients. While this irritation often isn’t terrible, it’s still not fun to have to deal with if it comes up. Scalp protectors are designed to protect the skin from irritation caused by the adhesive without disrupting its hold.

In fact, scalp protectors not only avoid loosening holds, but they are also designed to help increase the hold of an adhesive. This is why stylists will often use them on all of their clients, and not just the ones with sensitive skin.

Scalp protectors help increase the hold by protecting the adhesive from the wear and tear of daily life. This includes things like:

  • Natural oil produced by the skin
  • High humidity
  • Sweat

Since scalp protectors are able to create a barrier between adhesive and the skin, the adhesive is less likely to be weakened by these factors.

Walker Tape Scalp Protectors

So, it’s not hard to see why so many stylists trust scalp protectors. Now you may be wondering what kind of options you have with these.

There are two scalp protectors: Scalp Protector and Max Hold Sport. Each is good in its own way. So, let’s go over each of them and what they bring to the table.

Scalp Protector

This is our classic Scalp Protector. It creates a more basic layer of protection between the scalp and the adhesive. It is good for clients who:

  • Live in humid areas
  • Exercise regularly
  • Have oily skin

Max Hold Sport

Finally, there is Max Hold Sport. This is our most popular scalp protector. It is even stronger than Scalp Protector and starts working even faster. This is your best choice if you have clients who:

  • Want to work out, swim, or just be active right away
  • Sweat more than usual
  • Live in extra humid or hot areas.

The hardest part of using scalp protectors is deciding which one you want to use. Each one has its own benefits. Certain ones may work better for certain clients.

To determine the right scalp protector for a particular client, you have to consider several factors about them. You have to ask yourself things like:

  • How active are they?
  • How sensitive is their skin?
  • Is it humid where they live?
  • Is their scalp oilier than others?
  • Do they spend much time in saunas or pools?

Once you have these questions answered and have decided on a scalp protector, the rest is simple.

How to Use Scalp Protectors

To start, make sure that the area of application is completely clean and clear of any oils or substances that could affect the hold. This includes prepping the area where you’ll be placing the tape or liquid adhesive with 99% Alcohol.

Once the area is ready, apply your scalp protector of choice to the area. Be sure to avoid any areas that are irritated or any open wounds. Give the area time to dry before you place the system.

As soon as the scalp protector has dried, you can then place the system with the tape already positioned on it.

Bear in mind that with scalp protectors, the tape will grab on pretty quickly. So, if you’re worried about getting the system in the right spot, be sure to use Just-Rite Positioning Spray. It will temporarily suspend the tape’s hold so that you can get the system placed right where it needs to go, without affecting the overall wear time.

That’s all you need to do to use scalp protectors. Pretty simple, right?

Some people may not initially jump at the chance to use scalp protectors because they add another step in the install process. However, there is a lot to be said for using scalp protectors on all your clients, even the ones who don’t have sensitive skin.

Scalp protectors can help create a stronger, longer lasting hold. Plus, they can make wearing a system more comfortable. If you’re willing to take extra measures to ensure a long-lasting, comfortable hold for your clients, you’re following the Walker Way.

Is it healthier for the skin to use scalp protector? If so can you help med choose?

I ordered walker tape 1522 and its going to be used with a frontal poly hair system (1inch*6inch) that i just ordered (my first).

Also, when i remove the system – should i remove the residue with alcohol 99% or c22 or walker tape action? I have ordered walker tape action just in case alcohol is not suficient.

Feel free to tell me if i should add anything else becouse i feel overwhelmed atm. There is so much to take in when you are gonna do it the first time.

And also, what tape should i use if i dont want to change it that often? There are so many on your website and its hard to choose. I settled with 1522 for now, but i want a stronger one in the future.

I made my order on the swedish amazon and the walker tape action from the german amazon.

Hey there Alan! Scalp Protector is good for the skin in that it protects from irritation and helps increase wear time for oily skin, along with problems caused by humid climates. We recommend our Max Hold Sport if you plan on using a scalp protector.

For removal, you’re going to want to use C-22 Solvent first to remove the system itself, then after washing your hair and scalp, use 99% Alcohol to clean off the residue and the overall scalp.

If you don’t want to change your system too often (especially since 1522 Clear is a daily wear tape!), we have a variety of extended and maximum wear tapes made specifically for that. Your best bets are going to be Walker Signature Sensi-Tak Select, which is hypoallergenic and is good for a 1-2 week hold, and our Walker Signature Tape, which has a 4+ week hold time.

We do recommend finding a salon near you (which you can find here) in order to help you find the best products for you, and to help with installation.

We hope this helps. Please don’t hesitate to email us at [email protected] or call us at 1-800-759-5150 if you have any further questions.

      Happy holidays!
