Wig Care Quick Tips and Tricks

Wig Care Tips and Tricks - Graphic

With the enormous amount of information that circulates the web, knowing what the best practices are to recommend to your clients to care for their hair system can be a bit overwhelming.

We at Walker Tape® have decades of experience with hair systems and hair system products. Our founder started in the wig and toupee industry, and has developed many products to help hold, care for, and manage hair systems.

Because of this, you can rest assured knowing that our knowledge and expertise is reliable. Below are some quick wig care tips and tricks.

1. Make sure that your client has at least two hair systems. By doing so, you ensure that your client has a system ready for installation, and another as a clean and ready backup for their next appointment.

2. Only use products designed and dedicated for hair system care and preparation. Products like Bond Breaker shampoo, Walker Leave-In Conditioner, or Top-Loc Knot Sealer can ensure a great bond for your client.

For daily use, wearers can come across products advertised as being “mild” or “delicate”. These products still may not be suitable for hair systems. These products can cause them to dull, lose their color, or affect hold times.

3. Avoid styling products that contain alcohol. Alcohol will dry out the hair fibers in the system. A wig that has been styled with these products will accumulate buildup, which then must be rinsed every two weeks to prevent damage to the unit.

4. If working with synthetic hair, spray some of Walker Tape®’s System Revitalizing Mist™ on the wig, and comb through. System Revitalizing Mist™ will restore, revitalize, moisturize, and soften the hair system, making it look and feel as good as new.

5. When brushing hair systems, do not use a brush that has nylon bristles. Nylon bristles can be very rough on strands and disrupt wave patterns, especially for curly wigs.

Use a wide-toothed comb instead. The prongs will glide through the system, ridding tangles and preventing the hair from dragging.

6. Avoid factors that can damage the hair system, such as excessive heat or excessive cold, and conditions like rain, snow, or steam. Weather and temperatures like these can play havoc with the hair system.

Stay away from direct heat (blow dryers, hair, etc.). If the wearer gets caught in snow, rain, or steam, wait for the system to dry before doing any system care. This will help protect the system fibers.

7. Avoid friction on the system. Friction can cause wear and tear, and shorten the life of the system. It is preferred to have wearers remove their wigs when sleeping, but sometimes that is not possible.

If users are wearing their systems to bed, products like a silk pillowcase or a bandana for the wig are recommended to help ease the friction and stress on the system.

Hello! Because we don’t sell hair, we just sell the adhesives and removers, we’d suggest talking to your hair replacement stylist who can help trim and shape the hair system to fit your scalp and reduce irritation. If you don’t have a hair replacement stylist, you can use our Find A Stylist tool that will help locate one in your area. Thank you!
