How to Deal with Heat While Wearing a Hair System.

Ever been in a sauna, or maybe a hot tub, for longer than you would’ve liked? Where the heat just becomes unbearable instead of relaxing? When the hot sweat of your body merges with the hot water and you feel like a slick runway? Where you start gasping and licking the air for water to replace every drop that’s leaving your body?

Then you know what it’s like to deal with heat while wearing a hair system!

Of course, it’s not as bad as described above, but heat can be a nuisance to deal with for wearers. But it doesn’t have to be. In fact, there’re some ways to prevent and deal with overheating when your system is attached to your scalp. Such as:

1. Choosing a Breathable Base Material

Your unit’s base material acts a big part in helping to deal with heat during wear. Poly bases, especially the thicker-skinned options, trap heat and moisture and lead to the scalp becoming as hot as a spoon over a fire.

That’s why picking a base made of breathable materials will help regulate heat better. Materials like:

  • Lace bases are the most breathable option thanks to the mesh-esque fabric it is born from. Allows for more airflow to hit the scalp.
  • Hybrid systems: These combine the strength & durability of poly with the breathability of lace, for those that want the best of both worlds.

Switching to a base type with a more breathable material can help deal with and alleviate heat.

2. Use Breathable Adhesives and Tapes

The overall theme of this blog, and of dealing with heat and hair systems, is breathability. Breathability with the base type material, and now, breathability with the adhesives used.

Tapes and adhesives, of course, create barrier between scalp and system, which can make it hard for air to enter or the pores to breathe. This can lead to overheating.

Luckily enough, there are some tapes and adhesives that are made to be breathable. Our Extenda-Bond Plus tape is specifically built with holes to allow for max breathability during wear.

Thinner tapes (like Lace Front Thin or Sensi-Tak Select) can also reduce the weight and heat retention of the unit.

3. Maintain a Regular Cleaning Routine/ Let Scalp Breathe

After who-knows-how-long of wear, adhesives, sweat, residue, etc., etc.; can begin to build and pile up on the scalp. All that buildup then covers the scalp with an unnecessary layer of uncleanliness that leads to overheating.

Which is why keeping a regular cleaning routine is key to dealing with heat.

Wash the scalp with Bond Breaker shampoo. It helps to wash out residual stickiness & buildup and scrub the skin. Then apply 99% alcohol for an additional (and efficient) scalp clean.

More importantly, taking your system off allows your scalp to breathe! There’s nothing better than a cool breeze on a hot head.

4. Wear Looser Hairstyles

While a completely optional decision to make, looser hairstyles are better at managing heat.

Looser styles allow better air circulation around the head and scalp. While tighter styles can snare heat closer to the skin, and slowly but surely increase the feel of the heat.
